New pours and replacements

Concrete contractors in Lake Elsinore

We pour new concrete and replace failed concrete in Lake Elsinore: driveways, patios, walks, steps and slabs.

Plenty of our calls start as repair calls. When a repair will not last, replacement is the better choice, and we say so plainly, then quote the tear-out and the new pour together as one job.

The trade calls this work "flatwork": the slabs you drive, walk and sit on. What makes it last is mostly the work underneath it, so that is where we spend our time.

Straight talk on price

How new concrete is priced

New concrete is priced by the square foot, and the size, the finish, the site preparation, any old concrete that has to come out and the access to the site set where your job lands.

The typical ranges in the panel are for Lake Elsinore. They are not our quote: we come look, then quote the whole job before we start, with no surprise charges after.

These five things move the price the most:

  • Size. The square footage of the pour.
  • Finish. A plain broom finish or something more decorative.
  • Site prep. Excavation, leveling and the base underneath.
  • Removal. Whether old concrete has to come out first.
  • Access. How easily forms, concrete and equipment reach the spot.

What these jobs typically run around town, by kind of job:

  • Driveway, broom finish$6 to $12per sq ft
  • Concrete slab$4 to $8per sq ft
  • Patio installation, before materials$3 to $8per sq ft

The estimate that sets your price is free, with no obligation.

Built from the ground up

From compacted base to cured finish

We fix the cause of the old failure, compact the base, place and finish the concrete, then cure it right away so it reaches its strength.

Most of what makes concrete last is the work underneath it: excavation, compaction, drainage and a vapor barrier. The American Concrete Institute publishes the standards for how concrete is placed and cured, and this is the part you never see once the slab is down.

compacted base under new concrete

Every new pour runs these five steps, in this order:

  1. Fix the cause

Roots, poor compaction or bad drainage under the old slab get fixed before any new concrete goes in.

  2. Dig and compact the base

We excavate and compact the soil under the slab to the trade's "Proctor density" standard before any forms go up, so the slab sits on packed ground.

  3. Form and pour

Forms go up, and in hot weather we pour early in the morning or late in the evening to stay out of the hottest hours.

  4. Finish the surface

We place and finish the concrete, with "evaporation retardant" on the fresh surface so it does not dry out too fast.

  5. Cure it right away

"Curing compound" goes on right after finishing to hold in the moisture, and sealer goes on once the slab reaches full strength.

More questions about new concrete

These questions sit right next to new concrete work, and each answer points to where it is covered in full.

Curing time for new concrete

New concrete takes foot traffic after 24 to 48 hours and reaches full strength in about 30 days.

Here is how the wait breaks down:

  • 24 to 48 hoursWalk on it
  • About 7 daysLight furniture
  • About 30 daysFull strength

Curing compound holds in the moisture concrete needs to get there.

Water added to the mix on site

Water added to the mix on site weakens the concrete and increases shrinkage cracking.

Concrete watered down on the truck cures out much weaker than its rated strength. A wetter mix spreads more easily, which is why it is tempting, and why it is the wrong trade for a slab you want to keep.

Repairing concrete instead of replacing it

Concrete that is mostly stable with isolated damage, such as small cracks, minor chips or surface wear, can often be repaired rather than replaced.

When a repair will not last, replacement is the better choice. We look first and tell you which one your slab needs.

Questions we hear before a new pour

How much do contractors charge for concrete?

In Lake Elsinore, new concrete typically runs $6 to $12 per square foot for a broom-finish driveway and $4 to $8 per square foot for a typical slab. Size, finish, site preparation, removal of old concrete and access move a job within those ranges, and we quote the whole job before we start. What moves the price on repair work is set out in what concrete repair costs.

How to find a good concrete contractor?

Ask how the base will be prepared, because most of what makes concrete last is the work underneath: excavation, compaction, drainage and a vapor barrier. Check the contractor's license with the Contractors State License Board, and get the whole job quoted before any work starts.

What is the enemy of concrete?

Water in the wrong place: water added to the mix on site weakens concrete and increases shrinkage cracking. Poor drainage under a slab is one of the causes we fix before new concrete goes in. Shrinkage and the other reasons a slab cracks are set out in why concrete cracks.
